Content Analysis (lengths and shots)
The Conjuring (2013)
The length of the trailer is only 2:29 minutes, this allows the audience to see different aspects throughout the movie to see if they would want to watch it. A variety of spooky things are incorporated but are not shown fully, this engages the audience as they want to know what happens. Throughout the trailer it has 53 cuts, but the tension is built through longer cuts rather than quicker cuts. This amount of shots is around average, this allows the audience to see the setting and with the variety of shots it allows the audience to understand the plot and what is going to come. Whilst they are in the house, the majority of the shots are dark which indicates that most mysterious/unusal things happen at night and when people are most vulnerable. By the shots of the children in bed indicates that even though they are in a family enviroment where they should be protected, they're actually in danger. The length of the film allows the audience to understand that it's the whole family is in danger (by being in the house), not just one of them.
The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
The length of the trailer is 1:35 minutes, this is fairly short but has a range of clips so the audience is still able to understand the different aspects occuring throughout the movie. The Purge: Anarchy has 69 shots throughout the trailer to allow the audience to see all of the variety of settings where the main character goes - this is quick pace editing to allow that amount of shots in such a short space of time. Also, the movie is about people surviving so for people who haven't watched it before they are able to get their head around the storyline - this could be showing different people trying to survive like loading guns or trying to run away and find protection. They also go through the plot to allow the audience to understand the movie and if they decide they like it they may want to watch the others before watching this one. The shots used at the start are in the daylight, to near the end when it is night (dark) to indicate the purge happens during the night. This also indicates that throughout the day everybody is preparing themselves for the 12 hours which is upcoming, like bolting their doors so nobody is able to get in. The majoirty of people are wearing dark clothing during the purge to show that they are bad and the black/dark clothing represents death- which indicates they would like to kill as many people as they can whilst the purge occurs.
The Babadook (2014)
The length of the trailer is 2:24 minutes, this allows the audience to understand the story that is happening throughout the movie. It also shows the audience what the family going through and how it actually started - through the book. There are 85 shots throughout the trailer to allow the audience to understand the plot and how it is esculating. From the start to it just being a book and the shots showing the mother and son just reading it together, to strange things happening such as insects coming into the house through a gap in the wall. Then it esculates more to the son actually seeing the Babadook but his mother not believing him and then the Babadook exposed to them both to show they are both being targetted (have a problem). The mother is wearing a white gown to show her vulnerability towards the situation, and the boy is wearing pjyamas which indicates he has no power and is also young and vulnerable. Several shots occur which can link to death such as the saw and the bow an arror - these are both weapons that could be used to injur/kill someone. The majority of the shots within the house are dark/dull to show there is a problem and people feel useless at night/in the dark.
The Grudge (2004)
The length of the trailer is 1:23 minutes, which is fairly short for a movie trailer. There are 35 shots throughout this trailer, indicating that the director wants the audience to see brief snippets of the most significant aspects, to make them intrigued to see the movie. This is effective because it doesn't give away too much of the story, just enough for them to be hooked. The fact that it is short makes it easier to hold the audience's focus. Although this trailer is relatively short, there are quite fast-paced shots, therefore the audience still see everything they need to. In addition, within the trailer there are slow-paced shots which creates tension and makes the audience feel like something is going to jump out. During this trailer, there is a shot of a woman in a white shirt. This represents her vulnerability whilst being within the house. The lighting in this trailer is very effectively conjugated as, in one of the shots of the grudge and the woman, it is bright on her side of the shot and relatively dark on the grudge's side. This emphasises her purity and vulnerability due to white/bright colours representing naivety.
