Tag-line Analysis
When creating a media piece (especially a trailer) it is vital you have researched current horror movies to compare your ideas to and to also maybe give you new ideas. Taglines are a very important aspect of a movie and especially within a horror as it gives a sense of what the film will be about, hopefully, and encourage the audience to watch the film. A tagline could be anything from a catchy phrase introducing the horror, a line from the movie or just something the writer thinks fits well. We analysed taglines within other horrors and picked some of our favorites as a guideline to create our own.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012) 'You think you know the story' Why this is a good tagline? This is a good tagline because it makes people intrigued to know the story. This film is full of twists, the tagline implies this. This tagline sort of challenges the audience to knowing the story and makes them want to know it. |
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
'The most frightening thing about Jacob Singer's nightmare is that he's not dreaming' Why this is a good tagline? This is very good because the things Jacob sees are much like nightmares, however it is real life. This makes the audience want to know what type of nightmare is going on and what things they will be able to experience whilst watching. |
Scream (1996)
'Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far. Solving this mystery is going to be a murder' Why this is a good tagline? This is a good tagline as within the movie, the people are in love with horror movies and want to participate in it themselves. This is shown through the tagline as it indicates even though they want to experience it themselves, they are going to take it too far. They have incorporated about solving a mystery linked into murder to show that there is going to be several murders along the way. |
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
'He knows where you sleep' Why this is a good tagline? This is good because it is a very brief, basic tagline that realtes to the story. It doesn't give too much away, which makes the audience more intrigues to find out what will happen. This tagline could make some people feel uncomfortable because it is very brief and disturbing. |
The Possession (2012)
'Darkness lives inside' Why this is a good tagline? This is a well thought tagline as it is relevant to the movie. As there is someone who is being possessed with evil coming out of them, this shows that deep down darkness lives inside everyone. They have used this tagline to indicate that there is darkness/evil within everyone it just needs to be brought out for everyone to see. |
The final destination (2009)
'Rest in pieces' Why is this a good tagline? This tagline is a major play on words and it works directly with the image of a mirror on the poster. Instead of the usual R.I.P (rest in peace) the writer of this tagline has portrayed it more with the style of the movie. Final destination is based solely around the death and deconstruction of people and that's exactly what this tagline portrays. |
By researching these horrors and their taglines we realised as a group that we wanted our tagline to be short and sweet as it seems to be more effective. An effective tagline is what we feel will real our audience in to watch our trailer (alongside our poster photo).
