Interviews - Audience
We have interviewed people to see what their favourite horror is and what makes a good trailer.
We interviews 9 people and we asked each person a series of 6 questions, these include:
- What is your favourite horror genre?
- What is your favourite thriller?
- Have you watched a horror movie based on its trailer?
- How long should a trailer be?
- Do you like an obsessive sub-genre horror?
- Would you prefer a male or female leading role within a horror?
We interviewed students within school with the age range 13-18 and also teachers to collect a reliable source of information. After collecting the results they were put in a pie chart using the site 'Meta-chart' as we believe this is a reliable way of collecting data.

Question 1: What is your favourite horror genre?
Above is our first question in the questionnaire, 'What is your favourite horror genre?'. Obsession and thriller's were the most favoured sub genre's therefore we used this information to generate an overall guide to our trailer. This could be because an obsession of a character could be seen as a lot more believable then other genres, also teenagers are very common in these types of movies which we noticed in our research, which means it is easier to relate to our main characters. Some people might say that a case of obsession is a lot more likely to happen in comparison with Zombies. Within our research the Zombie sub genre didn't have any votes although we did include this in the pie chart still as it is a main genre of horror. We came to the conclusion that we could make a far better trailer revolved around a psychotic obsessive/thriller based storyline. Our audience research enabled us to do that.
Question 2: What is your favourite thriller?
We asked our audience 'What is your favourite thriller?' in order to get an insight to the types of thrillers our audience enjoyed. With the majority of them enjoying The human centipede over the others this gave us a brief idea of the types of things to include throughout our horror. It was this research we conducted that made us change our mind slightly of our overall idea. For example, with the audience majority preferring 'The human centipede' we began to think of sources of torture to use on our victims throughout our trailer.
Question 3: Have you ever watched a horror movie based purely on its trailer?
Asking our audience whether they had ever watched a horror based purely on it's trailer gave us an insight on whether trailers through a horror genre were effective or not. For example, sometimes a trailer can give too much of the storyline away and within a horror the intensity build up is vital and we had to make sure we didn't give that away throughout our trailer. After collecting our results and finding the majority of people had watched a horror movie based on it's trailer made us realise just how important the trailer could be, an essential make or break within the industry. This urged us to make our trailer as full of suspense as possible to make sure the audience would be drawn to the actual film after watching the trailer.
Question 4: How long should a trailer be?
Above is another question we asked our audience, 'How long should a trailer be?'. We considered that the results would be more similar in comparison to the other questions due to this question not really asking for an opinion. The majority vote goes to a trailer being 2+ minutes long and secondly 1.1.5 minutes; This is helpful considering our guideline was to make a trailer of a length around this time. We didn't think the length of the trailer would be the most important factor, but we didn't want people to get bored while watching, but on the other hand if it was to short we wouldn't have the chance to hold out the suspense.
Question 5: Do you like an obsessive sub-genre horror?
After having heard an obsessive sub-genre was favoured by our audience, we decided to ask it as a separate question to see within the whole audience who likes obsessive genres. From the majority vote being 'yes' we then finally decided we'd place our trailer around this sub-genre.
Question 6: Would you prefer a male or female leading role within a horror?
As described in our planning, we were very unsure whether to use a male or female leading role. We initially thought a leading male role seemed to work well within horror films. However, after researching we considered a female role to challenge convergence but after this research was conducted we decided the films that had a leading female role didn't do as well and weren't as rated as those with a dominant male. Therefore we reverted back to our original idea of having a male leading role within our trailer.
Would you prefer a woman or male leading role in a horror?
